About Us Figures from the 2000 Census show that the median rent in the United States is now $612/month. Nationwide, homeowners average $1307/month for housing costs, including principal, taxes, insurance, maintenance, and utilities. Those costs are even more alarming when you consider that nationally, close to 30% of all US families earn $25,000 per year or less. The median value of a home in the US has risen to over $120,000. The census also reports that a staggering 18% of renters nationwide pay more than 50% of their income for housing, and that the number of people paying more than 35% of their income for housing (in other words, living in unaffordable housing) went up 68% between 1990 and 2000. This affiliate is providing housing at a total cost that is $300-500 per month and building homes valued at less than half the national average. Comal County Habitat is performing a much needed service, and the need for our work will only increase as housing prices continue to creep, and sometimes leap, higher. Comal County Habitat for Humanity was incorporated in the state of Texas as a non-profit corporation on July 28, 1993. It is a local affiliate of Habitat for Humanity International. We are recognized by the Internal Revenue Service under a group exemption and assigned number 8545. Our employer identification number is 74-2667761. We have built 12 homes in Comal County with all donated funds, labor and materials. Habitat homes are not subsidized homes or promoted under any federal program. Comal County Habitat presently holds the mortgages for the completed homes. All homeowners pay a no interest loan to Habitat. The local Habitat affiliate is in a very enviable position of having payments current and no foreclosures. Presently homeownership is held by single parent families, parents of a handicapped child, and a mother who was living in a tent in one of the parks at Canyon Lake. The community is responding to the needs of the less fortunate in donating land, building materials, and funds. Significant funding and labor have been provided recently from The Scooter Store, The New Braunfels/Canyon Lake Board of Realtors, Bulverde United Methodist, The New Braunfels/Canyon Lake Board of Realtors, AGAIN!!, and Oakwood Baptist Church. The ReStore sells donated building supplies. All supplies are tax deductible for the builders and individuals who donate and proceeds go toward completing the houses. See the web page for additional details. |
